Job opportunity as Medical Transcriptionist

October 27th 2006 01:56
I've been seeing this job opportunity of being a medical transcriptionist, either working from home or as a part-time job.

A medical transcriptionist is a person who performs medical transcription. It should not be mistaken for the term medical transcriber which may also refer to an electronic equipment used to perform medical transcription.

A medical transcription, or MT, is an allied health profession which deals in the process of converting recorded dictations by physicians and/or other healthcare professionals regarding patient medical record to a written text. This written text may be stored as printed or electronic data. With the advent of the Internet, the electronic storage of medical records has become the preferred means of most medical professionals which facilitates the documenting of patient care and healthcare delivery regardless of geographical distance. It has also become the primary mechanism a physician communicates with fellow physician about the status and treatment of a patient.

A medical transcription is also used as medical record, electronic or physical, that results from the medical transcription process, normally in reference to a healthcare professional's record of the medical encounter with a patient. This transcribed record can also be consolidated into a larger document, which contains additional information of the patient.

Formal education of the medical transcriptionist is outside the scope of this article. What I can ascertain is that to be good at this opportunity, a medical transcriptionist should prossess a mastery in medical terms, ability to type while listening, some skills in editing, and enjoy being accurate. For those interested in this job opportunity, you can do more research online.

My husband suggested this for me once - mainly due to my typing skills. However, I knew it wasn't right for me. I recall going to a doctor's office once and having the doctor speak into his hand held tape recorder. My first observation was that he spoke so fast I had trouble understanding anything he said. My second observation was that English was not his first language and his accent made his quickly spoken words difficult to understand. My third observation was that the medical terms he used were way out of my scope, and spelling them would be an incredible challenge.

I could just imagine listening to those tapes all day long, and then trying to force my brain quiet at bed-time. I'm afraid I'd just dream "chatter".

I'd love to hear from someone experienced in this field, though, to see if it's as difficult as I suspect. When seeing the advertisements, it seems like a dream job - sit home and type all day. But then I realize that if the job was that lucrative and personally pleasing, I'd likely not be seeing advertisements for it all the time! *smiles*

Great topic!

W, I know of someone who worked as an MT. She was ok, not overly excited about the job, but ok. She had the job after she graduated from PT, whilst preparing for her certification exam. But then, she came from the medical profession, so it might have helped.

Thanks for your hearty post always.

I'll try to look into it closely. I've been hearing about this but never really bothered how I can do it from home. Thanks for the tip.
